SHOW LOW — A small grass fire June 23 at Show Low Industrial Park started as a result of a broken insulator on a power line.

The power line is located at the southeast intersection of Thornton Road and 16th Street.

The fire started at approximately 1 p.m. when a broken porcelain insulator on an overhead power line sparked, causing the grass below to catch fire.

City of Show Low Public Works employees were driving through the intersection and happened to notice the “arc” on the line above. They quickly notified emergency services and stayed on scene until Timber Mesa Fire and Medical arrived. APS responded and it was reported that the damaged insulator was repaired or replaced but could not be confirmed at the time of press.

According to Jason Paulson, an employee in the adjacent Empire Machinery building, “The fire was out fast, but the wind definitely made the fire spread more quickly.”

Kirk Webb, community risk manager of Timber Mesa Fire & Medical District added that, “This is a situation where a fire was not caused by lightning or by humans. It was fortuitous that the city employees were so observant."
